ST ALBANS CITY RES 1,

HARLOW TOWN RES 1

Capital Football League, eastern division 07/04/08

By BILLY SHAW

HARLOW Town Reserves bounced back from their recent defeat to local rivals Ware by holding a strong St Albans City side to a 1-1 draw.

The second string team fell behind to the Blue Square South outfit, who fielded several first team faces, but a second half goal from Shaun Gliddon brought them back on level terms.

Kevin Warren included four of the five substitutes from the previous Saturday’s first team triumph at Horsham, naming himself alongside Gliddon, Lewis Baker and skipper Michael Dumoulin in goal.

The hosts looked strong in the opening stages of Tuesday’s game at Clarence Park, with Luke Maitland smashing just over from the edge of the area 18 minutes in.

A low drive from Simon Martin was then cleared off the line six minutes later by Gliddon.

The home side took the lead on the half hour. Goalkeeper Michael Dumoulin came off his line to convincingly punch away a cross from a free kick deep on the right, but James Quilter reacted quickest by sending the ball back into the area, with Martin flicking a header over the retreating custodian into the centre of an empty net.

A rasping effort from Paul Bruce hit the underside of the bar early in the second half, forcing Dumoulin to dive to clear the danger, just tipping the ball away from the advancing Colin Cattermole.

A minute later the Hawks drew level. Michael Greene squared to Shaun Gliddon on the edge of the box after a blistering run down the right, with Gliddon’s shot rebounding off City stopper Tony Corlick.

But Gliddon kept running towards the goal and cleverly tucked home the rebound from six yards on 57 minutes.

Fast-moving forward Michael Greene began to wear down the St Albans defenders, and nearly scored on 62 minutes after latching onto a huge Dumoulin kick and running his marker ragged, only to shoot just past the far post.

Harlow’s keeper had to be alert in the closing stages, as he made a good take from a Simon Martin 20-yard free kick after Kevin Warren felled James Quilter.
