HARLOW TOWN 1,

CROWBOROUGH ATHLETIC 1

FA Cup, third qualifying round, 11/10/08

Match Report by BILLY SHAW

A QUALITY strike from Jamie Richards saw Harlow recover from a shock early strike from the visitors to book a Tuesday night replay in Sussex.

But Ryan Kirby’s men really should have won it in the first half, as a number of first half chances went begging.

The Hawks started with the same line-up as that which defeated Wealdstone in the league last week, while Crowborough’s dangerman Wayne Clarke was included for the visitors.

And it was Clarke who stunned the 609-strong crowd at Barrows Farm when he gave Athletic the lead in the fourth minute.

Gavin Gordon won an aerial challenge on the edge of the box, and the ball fell kindly for Clarke to plant the ball inside the keeper’s right-hand post with a left-footed shot from 20 yards.

Rhys Henry was set up by Leon Lalite on the edge of Crowborough’s area in the 13th minute but volleyed over the bar, before the Southend United striker pulled another 15th-minute shot wide of the post.

Henry again shot wide with a left-footed effort after Jamie Richards had controlled the ball well, before a determined charge by Richards ended with him finding the side netting on 26 minutes.

An equalizer for the hosts looked inevitable, and it finally arrived eight minutes before the break courtesy of Richards.

He collected the ball outside the box, picked his spot and placed a right-footed shot across keeper Mark Oldroyd and into the bottom corner of the net.

Six minutes into the second half, Henry charged down to the byline and delicately chipped Oldroyd, but his effort grazed the bar.

Henry produced a stop from Oldroyd on the half-volley after a cross from Mark Taylor on 58 minutes, before the Hawks defended well from a free kick awarded to Crowborough when Beckett Hollenbach impeded Clarke.

An off the ball incident at the other end led to Mark Taylor’s central free kick being kept out by Oldroyd when it became wedged between the keeper’s knees.

Harlow made a double substitution with 14 minutes to go, but the introduction of Clydie Roberts and Tashan Adeyinka failed to inspire them to go ahead and take the winner that their first half performance suggested they deserved.

Taylor wasted a decent opportunity from a free kick at the side of the box, before a late free-kick from Athletic’s Luke Gedling found its way comfortably into the arms of keeper James Hasell.

Harlow Tn: James Hasell, Mark Taylor, Beckett Hollenbach, Danny Chapman, Paul Kear, Ryan Kirby (sub: Clydie Roberts, 76), Leon Lalite, Jordan Fowler, Jamie Richards, Rhys Henry (sub: Tashan Adeyinka, 76), Danny Green. Subs not used: Clark Akers, Shaun Gliddon, Harrison Tague, Steve Waldock (GK).
