BILLERICAY TOWN RES 1,

HARLOW TOWN RES 2

Capital Football League, eastern division, 03/09/08

By BILLY SHAW

A YOUNG reserve side secured their second consecutive victory at the expense of Billericay Town on Wednesday night.

Player-boss Kevin Warren started in defence, while Anthony Charlton made his first start since pre-season trials with the first team.

After some good build-up play from Harrison Chatting and Jack Callow, it was Wesley Cann who went close in the 13th minute, but his shot was blocked at close range by the legs of Harlow keeper Jason Hardy.

Warren should have scored mid-way through the half, his initial header being cleared only as far as Jack Lampe, who crossed from the right before his boss’ second header was clawed off the line by the stretching Billericay keeper.

And it was the visitors who opened the scoring on 26 minutes. A great run down the right from Chris Hill saw him send a high ball over to Anthony Aylett, whose header looped over diving goalie Dean Neil and into the top corner.

The Hawks added their second five minutes after half-time when Anthony Jones sent Andy Edmonds clean through on goal, but he unselfishly squared to Chris Hill, who was in a better position to stab past Neil to bag his second goal in as many games.

But Billericay hit straight back when Jack Callow received the ball in the centre of the field, before taking a running shot from 20 yards which left the keeper rooted to the spot.

Hill later thought he was on to add his side’s third goal, but a late offside flag put pay to his efforts.

Neil made a good save before Hill cut into the box and lashed wide in a separate attack shortly afterwards, while at the opposite end, Hardy made a good take to deny Billericay substitute Rikki Burbridge.
