CHELMSFORD CITY RES 1,

HARLOW TOWN RES 2

Capital Football League, eastern division, 27/08/08

By BILLY SHAW

HAWKS reserves put in a decent performance on Wednesday night to win their first points of the season at the expense of Chelmsford City.

It was a million miles from the disappointing display at Aveley the previous week, with recent signing Clydie Roberts getting on the score sheet for the first time since joining the club.

City, who hosted the game at Witham Town’s Spa Road ground, struggled to break down a Harlow back line which included Ryan Kirby alongside Shaun and Michael Gliddon.

Danny Green latched onto a long ball from Shaun Gliddon eight minutes in but shot wide, while Gavin Cameron’s rising shot for the hosts was well held by Hawks keeper Jason Hardy.

Harlow opened the scoring four minutes into the second half when Anthony Jones’ ball across from deep on the right came back off the bar, where Clydie Roberts diverted it home with a diving header.

City hit straight back, with the visitors’ lead lasting barely a minute. Stuart Ainsley gathered possession just outside the centre circle, looked up and saw Hardy off his line, and launched a right-footed lob which dropped into the corner of the retreating keeper’s net.

Kevin Warren’s side regained the lead on the hour mark in a move which started with Michael Gliddon in defence, before Clydie Roberts surged forward and fed Danny Green out on the left.

Green ran down to the byline before pulling back for Chris Hill to slot home.

Hardy made a fine left-handed save to deny goalscorer Ainsley his second ten minutes from time, shortly after Roberts had produced a stop from City goalie Ashley Harrison at the other end from a free-kick.
